There is No Such Thing as a ‘Simple Case’ for a Lawyer
Why “Simple” Divorces Aren’t So Simple (And Why You Need A Lawyer)
You’ve heard it before: a “simple” divorce. It sounds so easy, right? Unfortunately, the world of law doesn’t usually work that way. If it did, why would lawyers have reputations for finding loopholes??
Think Lawyers Have It Easy? Think Again
Lawyers spend years in school. First, they earn a college degree. Then, it’s three grueling years of law school, where they don’t just learn laws, but how to think like a lawyer. Them they spend a summer learning how to take the bar exam. And even after all that, their education never stops! To stay sharp, lawyers take classes throughout their careers as laws and rules constantly change.
Why so much schooling? Because the law is a complex beast, full of twists and turns. If it were simple, we wouldn’t need lawyers!
Case In Point: “What’s Yours, What’s Mine?”
Let’s say you’re divorcing. At first, it seems obvious which stuff is yours and which belongs to your spouse. But wait…were there any gifts or inheritances during the marriage? What if one of you owned stuff before getting married, but then it somehow mixed in with joint property?
Suddenly, sorting out those assets gets tricky. Even “simple” cases can involve a tangle of legal factors, and only an attorney has the knowledge to unravel it all. Want to see how complex things can get? Check out this link and this case, and remember, these are just a few examples!
Beware the Promise of “Easy”
The legal world is full of gray areas. That’s why you should be wary of anyone promising a completely smooth and “easy” divorce. It’s best to find a lawyer who sees the complexities and offers realistic solutions, not false promises.
“But My Divorce IS Simple!” (Or Is It?)
We all want things to be easy, especially during stressful times like divorce. However, telling your lawyer your case is “simple” raises a red flag. Even when everyone agrees, the law has specific procedures and paperwork. These require an expert’s touch to make sure everything is legally sound.
The Bottom Line
Your situation is unique, and it deserves an experienced lawyer who’ll consider all the angles and fight for your interests. While the process might not be easy, a good lawyer will do their best to make it as smooth as possible for you. If you hire an experienced lawyer, they might make it look simple or easy but they carry the weight of the legal stuff, so you can focus on rebuilding your life.
