Why You Should Not Necessarily Choose the Attorney Closest to You for Your Divorce

November 7, 2023

While it may seem convenient to choose an attorney who is close to you, there are a few reasons why this is not always the best idea. First, it is important to remember that divorce is a complex legal process. You need to find an attorney who has experience in divorce law and who knows the ins and outs of the divorce process in the county you live in. This lawyer might have an office in a different town than you all together.

Second, it is also important to find an attorney who you feel comfortable with. Divorce is a difficult and emotional experience, so you need to find an attorney who you trust and who you feel will fight for your best interests.

Finally, it is important to remember that the distance between your house and your attorney’s office is not as important as you might think. Most divorce attorneys are now able to work with clients remotely, so you can easily find a qualified attorney who practice law remotely.

Why You Should Not Choose the Attorney Closest to You or Close to the Courthouse for Your Divorce:

Here are some specific reasons why you should not choose the attorney closest to you or right next to the courthouse for your divorce:

They may not be the best attorney for your case. Just because an attorney is close to you doesn’t mean they’re the best attorney for your case. It’s important to do your research and find an attorney who has experience in divorce law and who routinely handles cases in the areas of divorce that are most important to you, such as parenting times, child support, maintenance (alimony), and property division.

Cost: Attorneys who have offices right next to the courthouse may charge more than attorneys who have offices in other locations. This is because the rent for office space near the courthouse is often higher.

Convenience: It is important to remember that the distance between your house and your attorney’s office is not as important as you might think. Most divorce attorneys are now able to work with clients remotely, like I do. There is no part of your case that requires you to come to my office unless you want to.

In addition to the above, here are some other things to consider when choosing a divorce attorney:

Ask for referrals from friends, family, or colleagues. Listen to what they liked and did not like about their lawyer.

Read online reviews of divorce attorneys in your area. I have a 4.9 Google Rating, which fairly reflects what I have done for others.

Schedule consultations with several different attorneys before making a decision. If you have to pay for consultations, see if you can speak with the staff about the attorney’s experience, billing and retainer.

Be sure to ask about the attorney’s experience, knowledge, and fees.

It is also important to choose a divorce attorney who you feel comfortable with and who you trust. Divorce is a difficult and emotional experience, so you need to find an attorney who you feel can support you through the process

How I Can Help You:

I am a divorce attorney who works both in her office, which is conveniently located half-way between the St. Clair County Courthouse and the Madison County Courthouse, and remotely. This means that I can work with you without asking you to come to my office. There is no part of your case that actually requires an in-office meeting. I also offer a flat fee for my services, so you know exactly how much you will pay from the start.

I have extensive experience in divorce law and I am committed to helping my clients get the best possible outcome in their divorce cases – at a price that they can afford. I will work with you to develop a personalized strategy for your case. Most importantly, I am going to treat you like a person, not a legal problem. But to be able to offer clients the best work I can, I am only taking certain kinds of cases. I love helping people focus on moving forward, not fighting, and as such, I only take cases where you and your soon-to-be-ex can agree on everything.

If you are considering a divorce, I encourage you to contact my office. If it is not a case I can help you with, I will email you some referrals. If you and your soon-to-be-ex can agree on the division of your stuff and parenting issues, I would love to help you. Reach out through my website or give my office a call.
